eCommerce is growing at an annual rate of 25% and, at present time, it already generated 110,000 daily parcel deliveries in Catalonia. That’s the main conclusion to be derived from a research on online trade carried out by the Trade Department of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia. The forecasts indicate that this year there will be 53 million purchases in Catalonia -only of physical products-, a purchasing process that has mobility consequences, since a 73% of the purchases are home delivered.
Only in Catalonia eCommerce provokes 39 million trips per year, out of which a 23% may be considered unsuccessful (a 15.2% require a second visit and an 8.2% are returns).
This research highlights that, even 3 out of 4 parcels are home delivered, a 12% are delivered at work and a 15% at some sort of picking point (a 6.2% in the very same shop where it was bought, an 8.7% at picking points and a 0.2% at a reliable bar/shop). This research predicts a 21.7% growth in eCommerce sales in Catalonia in 2019, where 64 million purchases are foreseen.
According to this research, citizens carry out a media of 17.8 purchases per year. Regarding age frames, those who buy the most are between 35 and 44 years old (a media of 19.2 purchases per year), followed by 45 to 54 years’ frame (17.9 annual purchases).
